How does MyMobileWifi work?

We have a range of packages but essentially they all have 3 important components:

  1. A Router which is a box-like device that you’d find in any Home Broadband set-up.

  2. The main difference is that our service uses a 4G signal provided by a data SIM card – like the one you’d use in a mobile phone, as opposed to a phone line, to access the internet.

  3. Antennas are used to boost the data signal and depending on your needs, we have some options on these depending on how and where you use the service

So you use SIM cards rather than phone lines?

Yes our solutions use the big mobile networks like Vodafone to bring fast broadband to you. Luckily the UK has now got very good 4G coverage so even where there doesn’t appear to be much of a signal, we can often get you online.

See our data packages (Link)

For those who travel abroad, we offer Global Roaming SIM cards which are a great way of getting online at a competitive price.

What are the costs?

MyMobileWifi offers a range of packages depending on your needs so the costs vary and we can advise you on which package is best for you. You can find out more by visiting http://www.mymobilewifi.co.uk/our-packages

Essentially our costs breakdown into 3 areas:

  1. Router

  2. SIM data packages

  3. Installation

For home installations we do charge a fee and this will vary once we’ve worked out where we’d install the equipment on your property. Please visit our installation page for more details.

Is this a pay monthly contract?

Your SIM data is typically a 2-year contract and you have that direct with the data provider as you would with a mobile phone contract. The router, antenna and carry box (only on package 6) is a one-off costs with us.

How quickly can I get online?

It’s best to talk to us first about your needs. Then, once you decide to go ahead and place the order, the equipment is dispatched by first class post and installation will be arranged as soon as possible with our teams – normally within a week. So you could be online within days.

Do you need to visit my property before you install?

A lot of the time, we can do everything remotely. However, for complex installations or challenging locations, we may have to visit you and survey the property first.

We can also visit you and demonstrate the equipment ‘in-situ’ but there is a charge for this and we will provide a quote separately.

How do I contact you?

The best way to contact us is on the phone on 02382 250125 or via email.

Can I get the service in my area?

We cover all of the UK and Northern Ireland

My mobile phone signal is poor in my home – will your service still work?

We will work out whether or not our service will work for you before you buy from us. We do this by researching network coverage in your area. The equipment we provide is very powerful and the package means you stand a better chance of getting a signal than with just your mobile phone.

How would your equipment fit in with my existing network?

Our packages effectively ‘broadcast’ a Wi-Fi signal. just like most home routers and has four “Ethernet” plugs and your current router may have these. Anything plugged into these should be plugged into the equipment we supply. If you need to place the equipment in a different part of your property, you may need to create a link back to your current system, but thas is very easy to achieve.

What if your equipment can’t get a signal at floor level?

In the event of this happening, we may need to mount the equipment higher up. So we may need to go upstairs or even into the attic. If that doesn’t work, we’ll look at an aerial on your roof or any other high point. If you have any conservation or building restrictions on your house, it may be worth telling us first!

Will I need a mast?

Thankfully, only a handful of customers have needed a mast. If a signal cannot be obtained by using the basic equipment as described above (aerial included), then a mast at a strategic point on your land may well get you a signal. In the event of this happening, we may need to review the solution. That’s why it’s important to gather as much information as possible about your property and surrounding area beforehand on the outset so we can anticipate these issues right from the start

It goes without saying that set-up costs for a mast quite high and some of of our customers have ‘shared’ these costs with neighbours who also need to get online.

Who do I speak to if I have a technical problem with my equipment?

If it’s routers or antennas then you need to contact us via email or phone.

If the issue is related to your data/SIM card then you need to contact the provider(s) direct. Depending on the logo on your SIM card. Please make sure you have your account details to hand so they locate you when you contact them.

What LTE speed should I expect?

LTE  / 4G is not an exact science and, once service is established, it does vary day to day. However this is generally stable and fast.

Can I get an unlimited data package?

Unfortunately no, the 4G providers currently offer data packages however we work with Vodafone and can supply you with a package.

How much data will I need each month?

There are a number of different calculators you can use to help you estimate this. We like the Broadband Now calculator, which allows you to take into account different consumption habits for each user: http://www.broadbandnow.org/resources/data-usage-calculator/

1 gigabyte (GB) is equal to 1000 megabytes (MB)

Approximate data consumption for popular activities is:

Web browsing: 7 GB per person per month (based on average of 48 hours browsing the web per month)

Streaming video content (e.g. Netflix): 1 GB per hour in on a SD (standard definition) package, 3GB per hour on an HD (high definition) package.

Downloading video content (e.g. renting from iTunes): A standard length movie on iTunes requires 4GB for a HD file and about 1.5GB for a SD copy. TV shows about 1.5GB for HD and 800MB for SD.

Browsing social media (based on approx. 40 minutes per day): 2GB per month per person

Watching a YouTube video: Approx 37.5MB for a 5 minute video at 720p (HD). You can set your account to default to lower quality to reduce this figure.

Video calling (e.g. Skype): Approx.10.5 MB per minute

Gaming: 25 – 100MB per hour. *However* downloading additional games and/or updates and patches can consume 50GB or more. If you have an avid gamer in the household, it may be worth retaining a secondary slower connection for downloading large data files.

Uploading files to “cloud storage”: This will correlate to the size of the files you are uploading. As with gaming, it may be worth retaining a secondary slower connection for downloading large data files.

How much do the data packages cost?

Data costs approximately £1 per GB per month, though this varies slightly by provider.

Where do I buy my data from?

We can supply you a Vodafone package if this is suitable in your area.
